Comprehensive Enterprise Platform - Sharetronix

Project

The Sharetronix platform is an enterprise-ready suite of Web 2.0 tools that offers best-in-class multimedia microblogging, blogs, wiki space, dynamic user profiles and user groups and more. From the beginning, it was clear that this was a huge project posing many challenges. The Sharetronix team had prepared an enormous list of improvements and new functionalities for Melon to implement. 

The Sharetronix project had two areas of focus. One was creating the core product, our client’s main offering. The other was to assist the Sharetronix team in designing and developing customized deployments when new clients signed up for their suite. 

Process

In two and a half years, Melon’s dedicated team working on Sharetronix quadrupled and was combining the skills of developers, testers and designers.  To achieve maximum efficiency, we developed a custom tool for database installation and update and started to use a build server and automated test tools. We needed a deep level of understanding of the platform, so we started using Sharetronix itself to plan new features, to discuss and document them.

Characteristic for this project was our client’s active part in every task and the efficient collaboration we achieved.

Challenges

The first major challenge was to merge the different existing versions developed for different clients into one comprehensive enterprise version. We took these versions over and enhanced, cleaned and developed them, excited about working on a powerful product that adds a social layer to the enterprise. We decided on a major architectural change to fully rewrite the software business layer. In order for the platform to stay on the cutting edge, we always kept our source code updated to the latest versions of the .NET Framework.

Custom implementations

Another major challenge was to support dozens of different client installations, as Sharetronix enrolled several very high-profile customers with numerous specific requirements. The team had to work on customizing the platform for each separate Sharetronix customer and support these versions after their deployment.

Results

Sharetronix 4.0 was released at the end of 2010 and since then has been supported and maintained by an internal team at Sharetronix. Our client has been very appreciative of the work we completed.

Built with the latest technologies, Sharetronix is a trusted collaboration platform for dozens of clients. Among the Sharetronix adopters are many large and small financial, telecommunication and other enterprises.
